History

Stevens Middle School, once known as Stevens Junior High School, stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Isaac Ingalls Stevens. Our school's name pays homage to this remarkable individual who left an indelible mark on both history and education. Delve into the rich history that forms the foundation of our institution.

Isaac Ingalls Stevens: A Man of Distinction

Isaac Ingalls Stevens, a distinguished figure from Massachusetts, is the namesake of our school. His journey through life and accomplishments weave a narrative of courage, leadership, and commitment to education.

After graduating from West Point in 1839, Stevens embarked on a path of service and excellence. He supervised fortifications along the New England coast and subsequently assumed command of the coast survey office in Washington D.C. This marked the beginning of a journey that would lead him to significant roles in shaping the destiny of Washington State and the nation.

A Heroic Legacy

Stevens' legacy was not confined to administrative duties alone. In 1857, he was elected Territorial Delegate to Congress, furthering his impact on shaping the course of the nation. As the Civil War erupted in 1861, Stevens was recommissioned into the Union Army. He actively participated in pivotal battles, including the Battle of Port Royal. Tragically, he met his fate during the Battle of Chantilly at the age of 44.

Honoring His Memory

Stevens Middle School stands as a living tribute to Isaac Ingalls Stevens, a man who navigated history with remarkable courage, dedication, and leadership. As students walk through our halls, they are reminded of the enduring values and principles that Stevens personified.

Our school community is committed to upholding the legacy of Isaac Ingalls Stevens through fostering an environment of excellence, courage, and a commitment to education. As we navigate the challenges of the present and look toward a promising future, we draw inspiration from the history that has shaped us.
